Pricing, quotes and how the money works
The money questions come first every time, and they should. Here is exactly how quoting and callout fees work on every job we take.
What does a call out actually cost?
Nothing. The call out fee is $0, your plumber inspects the job, and you receive a fixed written price before any work begins, so the assessment never costs you a cent. If the price does not suit, you owe us nothing and we walk away.
How does the fixed price quote work?
Your plumber diagnoses the job properly, then writes the full price down before lifting a tool. There are no hourly meters and no estimates that grow. Weekend or weeknight, the pricing method stays the same.
Do you work after hours and on weekends?
Yes. A licensed plumber answers the phone day and night, including weekends and public holidays, and after-hours jobs are priced the same fixed way as daytime work. For the 2am version of this question, the emergency plumbing page explains how a callout actually runs.

The pipe and drain problems this peninsula breeds
A peninsula of old clay sewers, mature canopy and steep falls to the water produces a very particular set of drainage faults. These are the ones locals ask about most.
Why do drains on the peninsula keep blocking with tree roots?
The peninsula's mature figs and jacarandas push roots into the original 1920s earthenware sewers, whose cracked joints read as an invitation. A camera first, then jetting or pipe relining, usually ends the cycle. The full pattern is on the blocked drains page.
Is a blocked sewer different from a blocked drain?
It is. A single slow fixture usually points at the fixture or its branch line, while gurgling toilets, sewage smells and backups at the lowest bathroom point at the main. The blocked sewer page covers the main-line version of the problem.
Can steep waterfront blocks be drained properly?
They can, and it is a local specialty. Blocks falling toward Woodford and Tambourine Bays carry long drainage runs cut through sandstone, so repairs are designed around the falls rather than fighting them. See stormwater for the run-off side of it.
Are old galvanised pipes worth replacing?
Usually, yes. Decades of internal corrosion leave galvanised lines restricting flow and shedding debris, and because the damage is systemic, patching one section rarely helps. Replacement with modern piping restores real pressure, and leak detection finds where ageing runs have already let go.

Should I repair or replace my hot water system?
A tank rusted through its shell, or a unit repeatedly failing past its service window, is replacement territory, while a dead element, stuck thermostat or valve fault is usually a straightforward repair. The decision path is spelled out on hot water repair and hot water replacement.
Can a new system fit the tight side passages on older homes?
Almost always. Plenty of interwar homes here run storage tanks wedged into narrow passages between double-brick walls, and slim-profile tanks, compact continuous flow units and careful rigging solve most of them. The hot water installation page covers the options.
Do you do renovations, bathrooms and kitchens?
Yes, from a resealed shower to a full bathroom refit. Victorian and Federation bathrooms often hide pans bedded into concrete over original earthenware, so the work starts inside the walls. Start at bathroom plumbing or kitchen plumbing.
Do you service gas appliances and test backflow devices?

What should I do while waiting for an emergency plumber?
Turn the water off at the meter for a burst or overflow, shut the gas at the meter if you smell gas, and keep everyone clear of the area. More make-safe detail sits on toilet overflowing and no hot water.
